Taking tea at the stylish Savoy

by Phoebe Frangoul
Savoy afternoon tea

During London Fashion Week the Handbag fashion team decamped to the Savoy’s newly refurbished American Bar for a restorative cocktail before the Maria Grachvogel show and we vowed to return to try the famous afternoon tea. Now we have, we can honestly say it’s the finest in London. The Savoy has fashion form – there are gorgeous archive images of Christian Dior surrounded by a bevy of models wearing his divine couture creations, and chic snaps of Lauren Bacall and Marilyn Monroe enjoying their opulent surroundings. And if it’s good enough for Marilyn…

At the moment the traditional afternoon tea has a festive flavor, so once you’ve comfortably arranged yourself on the pale green plush sofas and armchairs in the elegant Thames Foyer and selected your tea, you are presented with a mouthwatering selection of dainty Christmas-themed finger sandwiches, including turkey and smoked salmon. Next up are light, fluffy scones served with raspberry preserve, clotted cream and lemon curd.

Be careful to pace yourself as if you eat too many, you won’t have room for the pastries which right now include an eggnog éclair and other festive fancies decorated with teeny-tiny snowflakes. And just when you think you can’t eat another thing, they wheel round the cake trolley which has Stollen, traditional fruit cake and a light apple and cinnamon cake.

The setting is impossibly glamorous, the atmosphere relaxing with a pianist playing classic Christmas tunes and the tea is out of this world - what's not to love?

The Savoy’s festive afternoon tea is £40 and available from 2:30 – 6:30pm. Visit www.fairmont.com for more information
