London Fashion Week 2011 – day two

Louise Gray gets busy with the balloon pump

Today’s gloomy clouds and constant rain did little for the moods – and hairstyles – of fashion’s finest on the second day of London Fashion Week 2011. This meant it was all down to the clothes to cheer us up, and cheer us up they did. Jaeger (with a front row appearance from New York Fashion Week stalwart Olivia Palermo and Jourdan Dunn talking the catwalk) gave a master class in chic winter layering that was almost enough to warm the cockles on an icy February morning.

Waistcoat-scarf hybrids, camel coats (they’re back, so don’t give yours to the charity shop on the first of March), and mustard tones were offset with pops of bright colour. Tangerine, cerise and cobalt blue all made guest appearances against a neutral base palette, giving us a playful winter collection that seems distinctly less grown up than this year’s camel and black-fest.

Louise Gray was also having fun with fashion. When she wasn’t putting her models in balloon headpieces, she showcased a kaleidoscopic collection, with tartans, stripes all vying for attention to terrifying effect.

There was reprieve to be had at the Markus Lupfer’s autumn/winter 2011 presentation at the Sanderson – but not much. Amid a sea of trademark black and grey knits, Lupfer managed to inject just as much fun into his collection with a flash of tangerine orange and polka dot tights (a la Marc Jacobs – we feel a flash trend coming on!). All in all last winter’s grown-up fashion didn’t really get a look in, but that’s ok – you can’t be sensible all the time.
