Channel 4 Education is doing its bit to spread the sustainable fashion message by launching a site that focuses on swapping rather than shopping for clothes. Closet Swap and its accompanying iPhone app and Facebook page encourages fashion fans to upload pictures of pieces in your wardrobe to build an online closet, which you can then swap with a network of friends. I you have an iPhone you can also send a ‘Fashion SOS’ to your Facebook wall to see if anyone in your community can lend you the missing piece in an outfit. The more you swap and share, the higher your ranking on the site.
Fashion insiders like Tatty Devine’s Harriet and Rosie are getting involved, explaining, “We often swap clothes with each other at Tatty Devine, and the main message of our new craft book is 'one girl's trash is another girl's treasure'. Swapping, reusing and customising are how we started Tatty Devine. We firmly believe in the power of the swap, so we'll be signing up to Closet Swap and sharing our accessory collections."
But our favourite bit of the Closet Swap project is the function which tells you where the nearest vintage, charity and sustainable clothing shops are to your location – so handy when you’re in a new city and want to get straight to the good shopping!
