Choosing a winter coat is a big deal it will take up a significant chunk of your wardrobe budget and youll probably be wearing it almost every day for months, so its important to pick something just right. But are there any dos and donts when it comes to shopping for your major purchase? Is it better to shop in the morning or the afternoon? With friends or on your own? Online or on the high street? And how do you strike a balance between buying something that feels fashionable and fresh, but wont look totally dated by next winter? Yes, its a minefield...
We asked Moriamo Oshodi, head of womenswear buying at Asos.com for her expert opinion and this is what she advised. Buy a coat in a fabric that holds its shape; a wool coat with cocoon sleeves will create a clean modern look with that all-important nod to the 60s trend. Update the classic trench by purchasing in a standout bold colour or with interesting details such as gilet overlays or contrasting belts.
The Benetton Design Team had some great tips for making shopping on the high street stress-free. For a serious investment purchase like a coat, it is best to avoid shopping during the lunchtime rush hour; make sure you have time to try a few things on. Take along a friend whose style you admire and advice you trust. As a winter coat will see you through the cold months, its worth trying one on with a few layers or a chunky knit underneath; just to give an idea of how it will look, fit and feel when worn over more than just a t-shirt.
The English heritage style is a good current trend to invest in, as a tweed coat in neutral colours will always be a good wardrobe staple, so are some of the more androgynous pieces such as a crombie overcoat. Both items are timeless and can be styled and worn in many different ways. A fun bright splash of colour, or statement print on a coat might not work season after season, but it is a great way to brighten up a winters day and may cheer you up through the cold months!
If you already own a coat that you love, but want to give it a little spruce up for the new season, take a look at how coats were being styled on the Autumn/Winter catwalks and buy some accessories on the high street to recreate the designer looks. A double-layered belt will give a subtle nod to the fetish trend and add interest to last seasons camel coat, while a printed silk scarf (these can be picked up cheaply in vintage stores and charity shops) will add a splash of dandyish colour to a breast pocket. If youre handy with a needle, consider changing the buttons on an old coat for some shiny new ones were a sucker for those naval-style embossed gold buttons you find on 80s blazers.
