Geri Haliwell in a skin-tight, strapless Union Jack print dress is one of our clearest memories of the 90s. The former Spice Girls choice of clothing for the 1997 Brit Awards cemented her style more clearly in our eyes than any of the other Spices. Weve got no idea what Baby, Scary or Sporty were wearing (wed take a stab in the dark and guess a baby doll dress, some leopard print, and a tracksuit, respectively), and Victoria Posh Spice Beckham, well, lets just say her fashion came into its own way later.
So what was it about that dress that was so iconic? Well, for starters, it was the most flesh-baring outfit on offer at the Brits that year or maybe any year with the paps sticking their cameras up her skirt and down her cleavage like nobodys business. Which ensured its long-lasting fame.
Secondly, it was super patriotic. At the time, Britain and us Brits were cool again for the first time in a long time. We had Brit Pop, we had cool bands like Oasis and Blur, we had young Tony Blair at number 10, and the Spice Girls were the biggest girl group, ever. Geris dress chimed with the moment, and cemented itself in the nations consciousness because of it.
Well now ladies you can experience a little bit of Union Jack joy for yourself with Geris tongue-in-cheek collection for Next. The range, which features a bikini, sequin dress, t-shirt and vest top amongst other things, is the latest collaboration between Geri and Next and is definitely our favourite so far! So if youve got any 90s fancy dress parties coming up, or just fancy getting your hands on some bonafide Spice Girl clobber, we think you should check it out.
