Thierry Mugler, the designer famous in the '80s for creating the most outré of shoulder padded jackets, has been experiencing something of a renaissance over the past year. Thanks to being featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Superheroes exhibition, where Amber Valletta and Naomi Watts (who is the face of his perfume, Angel) wore vintage Mugler to the opening party, he was approached by bootylicious Beyoncé, impressed with the gowns she saw at the show, to design the dresses for her 110-date tour due to start in April 2009. She also wears a vintage 1987 Mugler gown for the cover shoot of her new album, I Am Sasha Fierce. In true maxi Mugler style, the collaboration didn't just stop there. As well as designing the costumes for Ms Knowles and her dance troupe, he is giving his creative input to the lighting and choreography. Eighties maximalist meets Naughties booylicious? It might just work.
