The Council Of Fashion Designers Of America (CFDA) awards are an annual glitzy ceremony to uncover emerging design talent and to give those excelling in the industry a big slap on the back. Well, it's that time of year again, as the 2010 nominees are in.
The American fashion industry's movers and shakers visited Diane von Furstenberg's New York studio last night to hear the nominees be announced. But who's up for what? The contenders for the Womenswear Designer Of The Year award are fashion heavyweights Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan, as well as rising design star Alexander Wang, while Tom Ford, Michael Bastian, David Neville and Rag & Bone's Marcus Wainwright will fight it out for the Menswear Designer title. Jacobs is also in competition with Alexis Bittar and Proenza Schouler's Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez for the Accessory Designer Of The Year award.
This year's Swarovski award, which recognises emerging design talent, sees fashion hotshots Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzaara all in contention for the womenswear prize, while Simon Spurr, Patrik Ervell and Richard Chai are up for the menswear gong, and Alexander Wang, Eddie Borgo and Dana Lorenz for accessories.
Our very own Christopher Bailey, chief creative officer of British brand Burberry, will scoop the International award, Iman is the recipient of the Fashion Icon honour and Michael Kors will get the Lifetime Achievement prize. What's more, the late, great Alexander McQueen will also receive a posthumous Special Tribute award from the CFDA board at the ceremony at New York's Lincoln Center on 7 June.
