Oscars: Fashion round-up

Many said the recession would have an impact on the red carpet fashion at this year's Oscars, but it really didn't disappoint. There were plenty of glamorous frocks and heaps of expensive, twinkling jewels on show that flew in the face of the forecasted understated look. It was all white on the night, as cream, ivory and pale greys were the big colour choices of the evening, with Best Supporting Actress winner Penelope Cruz, Marisa Tomei, Anne Hathaway and Evan Rachel Wood all plumping for dresses in light hues. There were splashes of colour too, with Natalie Portman in bright pink Rodarte, model Heidi Klum in a classic red RM by Roland Mouret gown and Academy Award nominee Amy Adams, also in red, in a floor-sweeping dress by Carolina Herrera. Many gowns also had fishtail or flared skirts, as seen on Vanessa Hudgens, Anne Hathaway and Halle Berry. The night belonged to Slumdog Millionaire, however, which scooped eight awards, and it was current fashion darling and star of the film, Freida Pinto, who really wowed in an asymmetric, blue gown by John Galliano. The shoulder continues to reign supreme too, with the strapless gown and the aforementioned asymmetric style (see picture, left, of Kate Winslet) still firm favourites.
