Stella McCartney isn't just about nice frocks, you know. The designer has been named as the only fashion personality in the Top 20 of the third annual Evening Standard 1000 List, which charts the most influential people in London.

That's not to say, however, that the fashion pack are lacking in clout - far from it. The list comprises 24 categories, including Tycoons and Retails, Media, Literati, Education, Pop and Rock and Foodies. The dedicated fashion section features designers including Dame Vivienne Westwood, Sir Paul Smith, Christopher Kane and Burberry's creative director Christopher Bailey,, alongside photographers such as Mario Testino and Rankin and models including Kate Moss, Jourdan Dunn and Agyness Deyn.

Naomi Campbell, Lily Donaldson, Alexander McQueen, Ozwald Boateng and Erdem Moralioglu should today be celebrating, having earned their places on the list as new entries this year. Political wife Samantha Cameron also gets a mention, thanks to her creative directorship of luxury accessories label Smythson, as does Luella Bartley, whose self-titled label is to cease trading, it was announced yesterday.

"London leads the world because of its excellence in many things - but above all, it leads because it is a centre of influence," Geordie Greig, editor of the London Evening Standard. "Many of the people profiled in this year's guide are national and international leaders; all of them recognise the capital's pull on the influential."

Adds Gideon Spanier, editor of The 1000 London's Most Influential People 2009, "We are spoiled for choice in a city of eight million people trying to decide who are the 1000 most influential people. This year's choices reflect the fact that life in the capital is changing faster than ever because of the recession and the turmoil in the City. While some established names have faded from view, we have seen new people making an impact as well as the re-emergence of some familiar faces."

The full list, which was compiled by a panel of specialist contributors, is published in full today.
