Fashion nurse

Here\'s your chance to see the inspiration behind the nurses featured in Marc Jacobs\' spring/summer 2008 catwalk collection for Louis Vuitton. Richard Prince, the American artist whose sexy pulp fiction nurses wearing medical masks were appropriated by Jacobs in an all-supermodel line-up last year, has curated an exhibition, Richard Prince: Continuation, at London\'s Serpentine Gallery. His first major exhibition in a UK gallery, the artist\'s selection features highlights from his 30-year career, including the photo of the Marlboro-esque cowboy riding through the desert (Untitled (Cowboy), 1989), a 1987 Buick Grand National car decorated with a photo of a topless biker girl (Covering Hannah, 1987), along with the paintings of the famous nurses. A programme of classic films, ranging from drama to cult shorts, has also been selected by the artist for open-air 50-foot screenings by the Serpentine. Marc Jacobs, whose next artistic collaboration is with New York-based artist KAWS on a pair of shoes due out next September, was at the opening party, as were Claudia Schiffer, Lily Cole, and Charlotte Casiraghi.

If the shoe fits

With shoes taking over from handbags as the new cash cows of the luxury goods sector of the fashion market, it would seem fitting that budding British shoe talent be nurtured. Accordingly, Liam Fahy, a graduate from De Montfort University, was this week announced as the winner of the inaugural Fashion Fringe Shoes initiative, a programme instigated to provide the winner with exposure to all aspects of the luxury shoe business. Chaired by Manolo Blahnik, the panel, which included the Director of Accessories at Selfridges and fellow shoe designer Rupert Sanderson, chose Fahy, who has previously won the Drapers Footwear Designer Of The Year Award, as the winner of a paid apprenticeship with Sanderson, who said "I am thrilled that the best candidate won and, thanks to the Fashion Fringe process, I believe we have unearthed a real gem." Colin McDowell, founder of Fashion Fringe, added, "Shoes are the most exciting area in fashion today. The originality and ingenuity of the six finalists was of an exceedingly high order."

Posh frocks

Across the pond, the indefatigable Victoria Beckham has announced her latest fashion venture: the launch of a line of luxury gowns, to be unveiled during New York Fashion Week next September. "It will be something completely different from what I\'ve ever done. I\'m just putting it together at the moment, but they will be very upscale dresses and likely will start at around ,000 [about £1,000] retail," she told World Entertainment News, adding, "I\'m going to be using very expensive fabrics and finishes, lots of embroideries." Beckham\'s most recent foray into fashion design, with Rock and Republic Jeans, was rumoured to have hit a bum note due to the ex-Spice Girl\'s lack of commitment to promoting the label, accusations which she denied.

Khan-do

Jemima Khan, socialite, humanitarian, and erstwhile girlfriend of Hugh Grant, has been commissioned to design a capsule collection for French fashion house Azzaro. Long admired for her ability to put together a chic ensemble, Khan follows in the dainty footseps of socialite and fashion designer Eugenie Niarchos, who designed a line of accessories a few seasons back that was sold at Dover Street Market. Vanessa Seward, who joined the house as designer in 2004, commissioned Khan to create the ready-to-wear and accessories line, which will be shown during the Paris Couture shows.

On the road with Karl

Karl Lagerfeld, who we most recently saw as a character in the latest offering from Grand Theft Auto, has put his face to something no less eye-catching, but certainly no more surprising. Drivers in France can spot the fashion legend\'s image on billboards across the country, wearing a fluorescent tabard. The government-sponsored advert  encourages drivers to wear high-visibility clothing when driving at night, with the tagline, "It\'s yellow, it\'s ugly, it doesn\'t go with anything, but it could save your life."  While it\'s doubtful it will catch on as a fashion trend, it certainly proves Karl is now a bona fide part of the establishment.
