The fashion photograph, agent of aspirational living, is the subject of a new exhibition opening this week at The Photographer\'s Gallery in London. Featuring work by 21 leading fashion photographers from the 1940s to the present day, Fashion In The Mirror examines what goes into the making of an arresting fashion image, by examining works by photography legends like the late Richard Avedon and Norman Parkinson, as well as current fashion darlings Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin. Co-curated by Michel Mallard and Raphaëlle Stopin, organisers of the annual International Fashion and Photography Festival in Hyères, France (villanoailles-hyeres.com), see it as a fashion education as well as the chance to gawp at some iconic fashion shots.

Christopher Kane, Erdem, Marios Schwab and Roksanda Ilincic have been named as the winners of the British Fashion Council\'s Fashion Forward sponsorship, it was announced on Friday. The scheme, which was launched two years ago, provides financial support to fashion designers based in the UK in the early stages of developing their business and who have already established themselves at London Fashion Week. "I am thrilled to have been awarded Fashion Forward sponsorship," said Christopher Kane, who received the Fashion Forward backing for the first time. "This is my fifth catwalk show at London Fashion Week and I am grateful to have their continued support." Hilary Riva, CEO of the British Fashion Council, added: "This season\'s winners already have an international reputation, giving them a firm platform to develop their businesses into influential fashion brands." The winners will each receive a cash prize to help them show their collections in London. Fiona Raisbeck

Dorian Leigh
This week saw the passing of Dorian Leigh, the American model whose aristocratic features embodied the look of \'40s fashion, and who, in her unconventional and glamorous life, has been called the fashion equivalent of Ava Gardner. Born in Texas in 1917, she was married, had two children and divorced before the age of 20, when she went on to study calculus and engineering at New York University. Finding work first as a draughtsman for the navy, and later for General Motors in the aircraft division, she quit after her design suggestions were allegedly rejected. Undaunted, she then worked as an advertising copywriter in New York, before fiscal needs made her turn to modelling. Although it was her sister, Suzy Parker (wife of the great fashion photographer Norman Parkinson) who is best-remembered as a mannequin, Dorian found great success as the face of Revlon in 1945. During her lifetime she gave birth to five children by four different husbands, as well as keeping a string of lovers whom she paid to travel with her to the various worldwide locales demanded by her job. In the late \'50s she co-founded Eileen Ford\'s modelling agency in Paris, as well setting up her own restaurant, Chez Dorian. She published her autobiography, The Girl Who Had Everything, in 1980, to which title could be added the words, A Long Time Before Other Women Did.

Roksanda Illincic at London Fashion Week
Twice a year, the world\'s fashion press, buyers and celebrity clothes horses flock to London to the biannual fashion shows. But where, you wonder, do they all go? Usually it\'s The Wolseley for breakfast, or Claridges for an early evening glass of champagne. This September, however, they\'ll all be hanging out at the same endroit: the elegant The Mayfair Hotel, tucked away from the main fashion thoroughfares but oh-so-perfectly placed a brief cab ride away from the tents, has been named the official hotel of London Fashion Week. While much of LFW is accessible to industry insiders only, The Mayfair is open to everyone, with special cocktails on offer, as well as a reviver corner complete with in-house therapists who will be on hand to offer mini massages, wheatgrass shots and oxygen. It\'s going to be one healthy fashion week...
