Thursday evening saw the first ever awards ceremony for green and ethical fashion at Shoreditch Town Hall in London's hip East End. The RE: Fashion Awards 2008 was a celebrity packed affair with Pixie Geldof, Leah Wood and Portia Freeman taking to the catwalk to strut their stuff and model the eco-friendly designs in front of a whooping crowd. A raft of leading designers from the British fashion industry, including Preen, Jonathan Saunders, Zandra Rhodes and Allegra Hicks designed one-off ethical pieces for the event's catwalk show. Fashion legend Vivienne Westwood designed a dress made from bark cloth and chicken bones, which was modelled by teen style queen Daisy Lowe. Big winners on the night included From Somewhere, the Notting Hill-based label that won RE: Designer Of The Year and the RE: Use Award for its commitment to using recycled fabrics and textile waste, knitwear designer Izzy Lane, who bagged the RE: New Designer Of The Year gong and Pachacuti, a Fair Trade clothing and accessories company, that scooped two awards for RE: Business and RE: People. Can't wait to see what quirky designs they dream up next year. Fiona Raisbeckwww.refashionawards.org
