Hot on the heels of the news that Madonna is the latest celebrity to venture into the fashion business, soul crooner Amy Winehouse has announced that she is teaming up with Fred Perry to launch her own fashion line.
The 26-year-old Londoner has joined forces with the classic British brand to create 17-piece womenswear collection featuring items in her signature retro style. The range, which will be priced from £20 to £100, will include capri pants, jumper dresses, pencil skirts, gingham shirts, Harrington jackets, twinsets and, of course, Fred Perry's classic polo shirts, in a palette of pink, grey, red and black.
The line, which is due to hit stores in October, will continue over four seasons and will be sold in Fred Perry boutiques and concessions, such as Selfridges department stores, across the country.
Richard Martin, marketing director of Fred Perry, told WWD, "Amy has been wearing Fred Perry for years, so we were aware that she was a genuine fan of the brand. She has a unique sense of style that reflects the brand's own historical reference points."
The label also said that Winehouse had a "hands-on approach" to the design process in everything from picking the colours, styling and fabric selection.
It's not the first time that the Fred Perry brand, launched by the iconic British tennis player of the same name in the '50s, has been linked to musical stars. The retro look of the streetwear brand was adopted by, and became synonymous with, the mod scene. The label has previously joined forces with singer Paul Weller and Blur frontman Damon Albarn to create limited edition pieces, cementing the label's enduring relationship with the music industry.
