If you want to earn some serious fashion kudos, Katy Rodriguez (or 'The Real KRod', as she's known on Twitter), is the name to drop right now. The LA-based designer may have been on the circuit since co-founding hip NY boutique Resurrection in the '90s, but it's the fashion line that she launched in 2005 - named, neatly, Katy Rodriguez - that's pulling in the plaudits these days.
Ever since Alexa Chung wore Rodriguez's 'Fancy' dress to a screening of The Twilight Saga: New Moon in New York last month, interest in Rodriguez in the UK has gone off the scale. Not that she's new to the business of celebrity, having dressed everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker, Chloe Sevigny, Christina Ricci and Liv Tyler to Rihanna and PJ Harvey. But, with a new website just launched and the international spotlight shining on her, it looks like 2010 could be the year things get very exciting.
So, why all the fuss?
Vintage-inspired is a hackneyed term in fashion these days, but the beauty of Rodriguez's designs is her fusion between old-world silhouettes and utterly contemporary details. Throw into the mix her insistence on using the finest fabrics - think custom dyed and washed silk charmeuse, silk taffeta, French lace and crepe - and it's little wonder that the A-list are going gaga to get their hands on a real KRod creation.
