Bear with us for a moment while we come over all Mystic Meg and make prediction for 2010: this will be the year that Gant makes it on to your fashion radar. And into your wardrobe. Presuming, of course, that it's not there already.
Gant as a brand has always been part of our consciousness - it has been around since 1949, when it was founded in New Haven, after all - but, with its heritage in fine shirts and its aesthetics rooted firmly in preppy Americana, it's had limited appeal. Until now, that is. The label has just launched its UK flagship store on London's Regent Street, and with it a concerted focus on womenswear (alongside all manner of brilliant service touches, including an on-site personal shopper and web terminals to allow customers browse the e-tail site).
Store aside, we also hear that the Gossip Girls are big Gant wearers thanks to their stylist Eric Daman, which makes it well worth a second look (or three) in our book.
The verdict? We're excited. For spring/summer 2010, the design team were inspired by Italian summers from the narrow streets of romantic Rome to the breathtaking scenery of the Amalfi Coast. The Gant Mainline collection features two bang-on-trend stories, New Nautical and Positano Pastels, while the more high-fashion pitched Gant Collection focuses on La Dolce Vita (think polka dots, high waists and sequins) and Capri, a psychedelic smorgasbord that invokes a carefree '60s vibe.
We've already earmarked this super-cute tablecloth check dress (left) as a failsafe summer staple. As for the rest, well, we'll see you in the queue.
Roll on cocktail hour!
