Anna Brewer wears Code rings by Lulu Frost
New York-based jewellery company Lulu Frost is one of those labels that you’ve heard about without even realising. Since launching in 2004 its signature, reworked vintage pieces – from brass door numbers to metal cuffs – have been instant sell-outs, and cemented a vogue for retro-modern costume jewellery. And now they’re introducing a new fine jewellery line Code, which launches this June, available exclusively from Matches, as worn by the gorgeous quartet of Mary Charteris, Suki Waterhouse, Portia Freeman and Anna Brewster.
"When the 2500 door numbers from the pre-refurbished Plaza Hotel, which I bought and made into pendants, sold out I realised how incredible the draw of numbers is to people," explains New Yorker Lisa Salzer, designer and founder of Lulu Frost. "Wherever you go, people feel something about ‘their’ numbers and numerology, as well as the symbolism of Victorian jewellery, was the whole inspiration for Code. I am obsessed with the way Victorians used jewellery to discretely communicate, and its mysterious and enigmatic qualities."
Clad in Mary Katrantzou and a statement necklace from her main line, Salzer talked us through the launch collection, unveiled at a chi-chi tea party at Kettners in London's Soho. A series of rings, stud earrings and pendants featuring numbers in flowing script, Salzer explained the inspiration for the collection and her future plans: "I want Code to be cryptic and mysterious, and pay homage to my grandmother Elizabeth, who was an antique jewellery dealer. Leading on from this collection, we are looking at the language of blossoms, and then stones, all inspired by the vintage jewellery that I grew up with."
