The latest H&M designer collaboration arrived in store this morning and amid the usual hype, the queue at London's Regent Street branch started forming at midnight. Rei Kawakubo, of fabled Japanese label Comme des Garcons (known simply as "Comme" in the fashion world), is the latest name to join a list which includes Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Viktor & Rolf, and, er, Madonna. The collection, which boasts men's and women's ranges complete with accessories and a unisex fragrance, debuted at H&M's new Tokyo store last week and it's much anticipated arrival in the UK did not disappoint.
First in line was a Japanese student who had braved the cold, (and the dangerous London streets) all night just to get his hands on a pair of trainers. Another man who had obviously done his homework, went straight for the rail of £200 limited edition coat dresses and bought all 5 in the Regent Street store. Kawakubo, known for her intellectual approach to her work, has worked with stretch wool, gabardine and cotton poplin in a controlled palette of black, white, midnight blue, red and rose. "I thought it would be an exciting event to work with H&M in order to sell Comme des Garcons clothes in places where they have never been sold and to appeal to people who may not yet understand [the brand]," she said. If you want to buy into her aesthetic though you'll have to get your skates on the rails are clearing as I type...
