An American financial website has just revealed that Victoria Beckham has spent £1.5m on Hermès Birkin bags. So finally we know what she actually does all day! Of course we already knew that shopping was her number one pastime, but procuring Birkin bags, especially to the degree that she hoards them, is a full time occupation. The waiting list (which only opens for a day or two twice a year), is up to four years long for your basic £4,000 leather Birkin bag. If it\'s precious skins (ostrich, lizard, crocodile) or rare colours you\'re after, forget it. Yet it seems that Posh has bagged one in every colour and configuration imaginable, including one encrusted with a three-carat diamond, which is worth £80,000 and one of only three ever produced.
Named after Jane Birkin who, legend has it, sat next to Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight in 1984 and complained that she couldn\'t find a suitably chic weekend bag, the Birkin has taken on a life of its own being name checked in Sex And The City, Gossip Girl, Will & Grace and The Sopranos and becoming the subject of a best-selling novel Bringing Home The Birkin by Michael Tonello.
Hermès are famously unimpressed by celebrity and don\'t tell even Hollywood\'s A-listers when the list is opening. If you really want your name on it, only sheer belligerence and commitment are worth a damn.
The revelation of the full extent of Victoria\'s remarkable collection has sent shockwaves around the fashion world, not least because of the perceived vulgarity of it. Liz Jones writes in the Daily Mail today: "Imagine owning 100 Mona Lisas? It makes any single one less important. Once you have one, or two, or three, or ten, any more is simply the innate ostentation of a woman with more money than class." Although we can\'t help feeling a teensy bit jealous of Victoria\'s stockpile, we do have to agree.
