A decade later, at a premiere for the biographical film \'Gia\' (for which she won a Golden Globe and a SAG award for best leading actress), the 22-year-old wore a black leather coat over her gown, looking every inch the post-grunge gamine

At the Screen Actors Guild awards in 1999, Angelina has already developed a taste for the classic gowns for which she has become known - she wore a white, off-the-shoulder floor-length dress, accessorised with a diamond necklace. It\'s also the only time she\'s sported blonde hair, which she\'d dyed for her role in the film \'Pushing Tin\'

Angelina takes inspiration from Morticia Addams, in an all-covering black gown, and waist-length black hair - a pretty daring and unusual look for the Oscars!

At the Oscars the following year, in 2001, Angelina could hardly have looked more different. Gone are the Goth-inspired black locks and make-up, and in its place she chooses a suited-and-booted androgynous look (she clearly likes to keep the photographers guessing)

Attending a premiere for \'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider\' in 2001, Angelina once again drives home the idea she is not the conforming type, rocking a kind of Emma-Peel-for-the-noughties look, complete with black leather trousers and boots - and visible inkwork on her midriff

Attending the Golden Globes in 2001, Angelina the sex bomb has arrived. It\'s not hard to see why she favours floor-length satin gowns, hugging as they do every one of her famous curves, and revealing her décolletage

A year later at the Golden Globes, Angelina once again favours a strapless gown, this time accessorised with a single string of gobstopper pearls - and dramatic eyebrows

At a Lara Croft premiere in 2003, Angelina has clearly taken a few style tips from the eponymous heroine - namely waist-grazing hair, and khaki green clothing

It\'s 2004, and witness Angelina the red carpet goddess as we know her today: picture-perfect, classic, and sexy in a white plunge-neck satin gown

Angelina usually steers clear of colour, but style critics went crazy for this vintage Emanuel Ungaro canary-yellow gown from vintage LA shop Decades, which she wore to the 2007 Cannes Film Festival

Angelina looks every inch the stylish UN ambassador and philanthropist in pearls and an elegant up-\'do at the Venice Film Festival this year - she\'s come quite a long way from the leather-toting biker rebel of old

Rarely has there been such an irresistible red carpet presence as Angelina Jolie. Although her metamorphosis from teen tomboy to the goddess we see today has taken many twists and turns - via grunge queen, goth ghoul, biker chick and sex bomb, to name but a few - a couple of things have remained constant. One, she has always preferred classic pieces - a tux, a goddess gown in white - and two, she always looks sexy (albeit in a sex-panther rather than sex-kitten kind of way).
Check out Angelina\'s evolving style, starting with the Oscars in 1988, which the 12-year old attended in a black taffeta gown, with dad Jon Voight and brother James
