Lindsay Lohan

Following her split from DJ Samantha Ronson earlier this month, Lindsay Lohan is reverting to the girly look we last saw when Rachel Zoe was her stylist. Gone are the tough leather jackets, stomper boots and accompanying scowl, and in its place find dresses, peep-toe wedge heels and a generally more vulnerable "I\'m in distress" air.

Short of burning up all evidence of "him", it\'s the most famous break-up statement: getting a dramatic haircut. Following the end of her relationship with Johnny Depp in 2000, Kate was no exception, and chopped her latterly perma-long brown locks into a gamine pixie crop. She also began inching away from the floaty vintage dresses towards a harder, more rock\'n\'roll vibe.

Gwyneth Paltrow

When Gwyneth got together with Brad Pitt during the filming of Seven in 1995, they adopted a his \'n\' hers look of boyish suits, leather jackets and blonde indie boy haircuts. When Brad left her two years later, the red carpet goddess we have since become acquainted with emerged, with glossy platinum locks and a floor length sparkling gown (note how Gywneth was not averse to a bit of nipple flashing back then - her American Princess image had yet to be cultivated).

After her divorce from Tom Cruise came through in 2001, the 5ft 10½in Kidman famously quipped that at least she could now wear high heels. She wasn\'t joking. Among her first post-split red carpet appearances was an eye-popping turn in a sexy black dress, split up to there to reveal her perfect gams and ending in the most outrageous strappy heels.

No longer Jenny From The Block, when La Lopez dumped Puff Daddy (as he was then known) not long after a notorious shooting incident in New York in 1999, the ghetto-fabulous sexpot morphed into a red carpet-fabulous diva (while upping the sex appeal ante, of course).
