Style hits and misses at the Oscars

Nevermind the nominees and who won what, glamour rules the occasion and the red carpet on Oscars night and what we all want to know most is: who wore what; who\'s got five-star style; and who should sack their stylist. Find out here in our Oscars fashion gallery...

Jennifer Lopez

Latino beauty Jennifer arrived with husband Marc Anthony and looked incredible in a Grecian-style, empire line gown. It had a jewelled neckline by her current favourite Hollywood designers, Marchesa and her jewellery label of choice was Lorraine Schwartz.

Rachel Weisz

British star Rachel Weisz always looks stunning and this outfit by Vera Wang is one of her best red carpet choices to date. The pale gold silk looks great next to her English rose complexion and dark hair, and the train has fabulous delicate tulle and chiffon ruffles. A clutch bag and jewels by Cartier complete the winning look.

Helen Mirren

We thought Helen\'s red carpet style couldn\'t get any better but she dazzled last night in this champagne coloured gown by Christian Lacroix. She takes home the award for Best Leading Actress and no doubt will be top of everyone\'s list for best style too. The waisted silhouette, elbow length sleeve and deep sweetheart neckline are perfect for Helen\'s voluptuous and slim physique. This dress was made for her.

Reese Witherspoon

Reese chose a midnight blue fish tail gown by Olivier Theyskins for Nina Ricci. She is dressed in Nina Ricci for all red carpet events and this is one of our favourites to date.

Nicole Kidman

Red was a popular choice this year and Nicole did it best in a simple hourglass tie neck, halter dress by Balenciaga.

Jodie Foster

Jodie Foster chose a beautiful pleated and draped chiffon gown in stormy blue by Vera Wang to complement her petite frame. Though we\'re not sure about the mumsy hairstyle and think it makes her look like a dead ringer for our very own Anne Diamond.

Kate Winslet

Kate wore a sophisticated and demure draped dress by Valentino with jewels by Chopard.

Anne Hathaway

It was a busy night for atelier Valentino, dressing quite a handful of A-list stars. Anne Hathaway shows just how much she learned about style working on \'The Devil Wears Prada\' and looks amazing in this white lace hourglass dress with a huge statement black bow.

Rinko Kikuchi

No surprises that the young \'Babel\' star Rinko Kikuchi appeared on the red carpet wearing Chanel. In a sophisticated black lace, hourglass dress she shows she isn\'t always about edgy style and can be a sexy screen siren when required.

Cate Blanchett

Cate looked absolutely incredible in a gun metal silver, one-shouldered dress by Giorgio Armani Prive. The colour and crystal mesh fabric underline Cate\'s intuitive sense for fashion and trends. She chose jewels by Lorraine Schwartz and a Swarovski crystal clutch to finish her triumphant look.

Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten wore a delicate pale blue, tulle embroidered dress from the Chanel spring couture collection. Like her most recent film \'Marie Antoinette\' it was low impact, pretty forgettable and not helped by her ungroomed, limp hair.

Eva Green

Undetered by the recent slating she received for her Baftas\' gothic Galliano look, Eva Green remained fashion focused and steered her look again into Gothic, costume-like territory. Regardless of what everyone else had to say, we really loved Eva\'s last vintage Dior, red carpet look; however this time she hasn\'t quite pulled it off. The nude chiffon is unflattering and the big hair is plain scary. Still we admire Eva for her non conformity amongst a sea of fishtail silk.

Beyoncé

Curves back in place, Beyoncé shows off her voluptuous body in Armani Prive. She gets top marks for the bang-on trend platform soled shoes but she\'s often guilty of choosing dresses that are a little too grown up - and this one veers towards frumpy. Still, with a face and body like hers, who cares?

Isla Fisher

Giving in to the fashion cliché that red heads should wear green, Isla Fisher wears an emerald, satin, strapless frock by Monique Lhuillier. Topped with big hair it\'s too \'Dynasty\' and looks a bit like a good drag get up. Definitely time to sack the stylist.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth chose a beautiful and chic deco style gown in pale rusty chiffon by Zac Posen.

Penelope Cruz

It was a fussy and frilly chiffon organza and tulle gown by Atelier Versace for Penelope, with jewels by Chopard and a Daniel Swarovski clutch.

Maggie Gyllenhaal

Maggie wears a midnight satin blue dress by Proenza Schouler.

Jennifer Hudson

One of the \'Dreamgirls\' and winner of Best Supporting Actress, Jennifer Hudson wears an Oscar de la Renta gown with a fab silver mini bolero on her shoulders. She\'s a newcomer on the red carpet and it shows. She almost gets it right with the dress and jacket combo, but with hands in pockets and collars turned up, she\'s trying to bring some street style attitude to her look - surely not what awards night is all about?
