The backing of the Council Of Fashion Designers Of America (CFDA) can work wonders for a designer’s career, just look at Proenza Schouler, Sophie Théallet and Alexander Wang, all of whom have won the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in the last six years. Now it’s the turn of Alabama-based men’s and women’s luxury clothing designer Billy Reid, who was announced as the winner of the 2010 prize at a star-studded ceremony in New York this week. Reid beat off stiff competition from nine other finalists, including Pamela Love, Robert Geller and Moss Lipow, not only scooping $300,000 to boost his business (jewellery designer Eddie Borgo and Nepalese-born Prabal Gurung won $100,000 each as runners-up) but also receiving an invaluable year’s worth of mentoring. What’s more, Reid was presented with his award by the night’s guest of honour, Karl Lagerfeld, and one of the leading lights of British cinema, Carey Mulligan (looking amazing in Chanel haute couture). And what of the other guests at the gala party? It was one of the most star-studded turnouts since the award’s inception seven years ago, with Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Alexa Chung, Anna Paquin, Kim Kardashian, Christina Ricci, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen all in attendance. They were joined by models Karlie Kloss and Chanel Iman, as well as a host of high profile designers, including Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Jason Wu, Phillip Lim and Giambattista Valli.
