The location for Temperley’s London Fashion Week show was one of the most awe-inspiring of the week. Set in the British Museum at night, with a front row which included Pippa Middleton and Rosaria Dawson (as well as Peaches Geldof, natch) the scene was set for a high-octane glam-fest.
For Spring/Summer 2012, Alice Temperley was inspired by glamorous blonde film star icons; Grace Kelly in High Society, and Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface. This was evident everywhere; from the sensual, elongated silhouettes of her playsuits and dresses, to the luxe silk and satin fabrics and elaborate beading details, as well as the retro accessories - namely turbans and amulet necklaces.
A key theme of the show was dazzling transparency. Dresses were sheer and nude, with delicate floral beading detail, while off-white and dusty pink were also used heavily with similar embellishment. Glittering jewels were sewn onto muted colour dresses creating a magical, dream-like feel to the clothes as they moved across the marble floors of the British Museum.
Another standout theme was the ‘70s. A white tux jacket and shorts, white wide-leg trousers, oversized floral prints, and jumpsuits galore, definitely gave one the distinct feeling of being transported back to the days of Studio 54.
But the standout pieces were certainly the evening wear pieces. Gowns (these were not mere dresses) were draped at the back with deep V’s at the front, and mullet lengths cropped up occasionally. There were several red carpet ready show-stopping numbers with super-intricate beading; a silvery-blue floor length dress with cross-over back, and the last look, a sheer white dress with short underskirt and soft beading and ruffle detail. Definitely fit for a princess.
