Mary Katrantzous penchant for elaborate, digital prints based on objects from everyday life has made her into one of Londons hottest tickets. Following on from last seasons under-the-sea collection, Autumn/Winter saw her eye drawn to literal everyday objects granted, those from a rather select range including archaic typewriters, circular phone dials, spoons, pencils and hangers. Somehow, Ms. Katrantzou managed to make even the most tedious and seemingly dull of daily objects beautiful in a palette of bright yellow, tangerine, hot pink, as well as mauve, sky blue and pale mint green.
This season the lampshade skirts still came thick and fast, but so too did mermaid dresses with peplums on the waist, or long-sleeved body-con dresses with undulating ruffles coming away from the bodice. The quintessential lampshade shape had also evolved for Autumn/Winter resembling an inverted umbrella sometimes, or with additional padding on the waist at other times.
Kick pleat skirts were also in attendance, as were fluffy, ruffled full-skirts. Wide-legged trousers with matching chiffon high-neck blouses and cape-like jackets made an appearance, as did oversized knits.
Marys show today demonstrated that this rising star is fated to only keep getting better.
