Paris couture week is notorious for putting some of the world’s most eccentric and extravagant fashion on show. Usually we all gasp at the cost of the hand-made, beautifully embellished, totally OTT creations – often worth £10,000 and up! The shows themselves are always extremely theatrical – just earlier this week for Chanel Spring/Summer 2012 haute couture, Karl Lagerfeld sent models down a catwalk that was constructed inside what looked like an alien-spaceship-aircraft. Complete with trolly dollies dishing out champagne...
However, for his show Jean Paul Gaultier turned the attention to the models themselves – each one had been styled to replicate the image of the late Amy Winehouse, complete with beehives, beauty spots and occasionally even a cigarette. Lots of the outfits were heavily Amy-inspired, including a Fred Perry-style tennis dress, corset dresses with nipped in waists and pencil skirts. Obviously Amy’s passing had a huge impact and her legacy has inspired many, but was this collection a fitting tribute to a fallen icon, or is there something slightly chilling about seeing her doppelgangers walk the runway?
