For Spring/Summer 2012, Christian Dior gave us a collection that oozed 1950s elegance; think exaggerated skirt shapes, checkerboard and zigzag prints and waists nipped in with pencil-thin belts. Wool and leather skirts were worn with smart cropped jackets, with just a glimpse of a sheer blouse and top peeping through at the neckline, while skinny, neutral belts ensured the tulip-shaped skirts were fully visible.
Checkerboard prints aside, mosaic-style embellishment cropped up across the bodices of dresses, and on sleeveless tops, in tortoise shell, sky blue and cream. A faint blue swirling rose print featured on a chic mac as well as an empire-line summer dress, while bright tangerine leather tops were matched with simple pencil skirts.
The evening wear was suitably delicate and frothy; black lace-panelled flapper dresses, bright red sheer chiffon party dresses and sheer nude off-the-shoulder dresses, all jostled for the accolade of best dress. A safe, but still beautiful collection from the design team at Dior.
