BAFTAs 2008
Last night's British Film Awards glittered with a particularly strong attendance from Hollywood, perhaps due to the writer's strike which, until it ended yesterday, had prevented the Golden Globes from going ahead and even threatened the Oscars. Guests arrived on a very chilly night at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden, to be regaled with the usual witty patter from host Jonathan Ross. Dior seemed to be the big fashion choice of the night, with Sienna Miller, Jessica Biel and Eva Green all wearing the label. Best Supporting Actress winner (for Michael Clayton) Tilda Swinton joking she wouldn't have worn her Dior couture outfit if she'd known she was going to win, as it was seriously impeding her ability to walk. Other big fashion names were honoured by the likes of Keira Knightley, who wore a Valentino gown (under an Alexander Wang jacket), Thandie Newton in Alexander McQueen and Best Actress winner Marion Cotillard (for La Vie en Rose) in Chanel. Rising star Emily Blunt chose the lesser-known Marc Bower and even wore green contact lenses to match the colour of the sparkly gown. Samantha Morton, who gave birth to a daughter just five weeks ago, wore Stella McCartney, and Best Actor winner Daniel Day-Lewis, when asked what he was wearing, replied, "This? It's by my old mate Paul Smith." A name-check if ever there was one. -Danielle Radojcin
