Tricky trend... Nu-tec
If like me you hung up your rave gear in 1989 then don’t even think of dusting off your PVC cycling shorts. Instead go back to the future with a few techie touches, says Fashion Director Tracey Lea Sayer
Dolce &Gabbana, Marios Schwab, Dolce & Gabbana, Sinha-Stanic, D-squared
If the word nu-tec scares the living daylights out of you then read on, because you need to re-position this trend back on to your fashion radar. Ladies, I am about to educate you. Banish all thoughts of last season Balenciaga's CP30 leggings from your mind. Nu-tec is new and all about technical fabrics and finishes, thankfully high-tec this season means high-spec and polished.
For a slick day look try a quilted jacket over a pair of shiny PVC leggings, credit cards at the ready for Emanuel Ungaro's black bin-liner jacket and Moncler's Ludivine jacket, or try Uniqlo if your wallet doesn't stretch to triple figures (their version is £39.99 and three people have already asked me if I got mine in Moncler - how I laughed!
If the sexy hourglass silhouette is more you, then try the curve-friendly and coquettish after dark look. Dolce & Gabbana's android-like foil dresses cinched in at the waist are the most extreme version, but the high street has the trend covered off. My personal favourite is Reiss' Latitia dress for £135.
The key to wearing the evening look well is simplicity. Novelty earrings and a tinsel boa might make you score with the office lothario but just think of your Facebook shame the following day. Nobody wants to look like a Christmas turkey!
Still scared? Bags and shoes are the easy way to embrace this hardcore trend. For those of you still can't face the full techie look, you might like to try Balenciaga's ‘Transformer' style heels or Burberry's slick studded ‘Knight' bag. Think high shine finishes in patent and metallic. The flash of a killer metallic heel or a metallic box bag embellished with giant gems might just give that LBD the Christmas make-over it deserves.
