Chanel a/w 08/09
If Karl Lagerfeld's last collection for Chanel (staged last November in London) was all about Amy Winehouse, then his autumn/winter 2008/9 show seemed to be directly inspired by the Olsen twins. The models sported long, wavy hair, parted down the middle, and wry, knowing expressions. Did Mary-Kate and Ashley, who attended the show, feel as if they were looking into a mirror? This being Lagerfeld, however, there was a twist: rather than the super-high hemlines and precipitously high heels preferred by the 21-year old Olsens and their ilk, the clothes were gorgeously sophisticated and grown-up: the tweed suits (some of which were ripped, giving them a lived-in feel) included skirts which fell above the knee, and belted waists which appeared at their natural position (rather than empire or down by the hips). There were, of course, a few youthful eveningwear looks towards the end: a designer can't alienate his muse(s), now, can he? -Danielle Radojcin
