www.handbag.com reveals the all time worst fashion faux pas

www.handbag.com reveals the all time worst fashion faux pas

As tartan and patterned tights are set to make a fashion comeback this autumn and leap from the catwalk to our wardrobes, www.handbag.com asks what are our all time worst fashion faux pas are by decade and what should be relegated to room 101?

www.handbag.com's findings revealed, although leggings keep reappearing on the fashion pages and the likes of Sienna Miller and Kate Moss seem to favour them, it seems they are our most hated fashion trend.  An astounding 34% of respondents name them as their worst fashion faux pas, however they were closely followed by:

Dungarees

Shoulder pads

Leg warmers

Stone washed jeans.

Belinda White, Fashion Director at www.handbag.com, says: "Although leggings are a fashion staple for a lot of women, unless you know how to wear them they are no more then a piece of tight lyrca that clings in all the wrong places.  Let's be honest unless you have the legs of Elle MacPherson, leggings should never be worn on their own, because when they do it's a huge fashion no no."

With fashion trends constantly changing and designers taking inspiration from past decades, www.handbag.com asked women to plot the worst fashion disasters by decade:

Top 5 Fashion disasters by the decade:

1960's

1970's

1980's

1990's

2000's

Beehive hair do's

Polyester leisure suits

Short hair with a ra'ts tail plait

Caps with tags left on

Burberry print

PVC mini skirt

Pom poms on everything

Shoulder pads

Bum bags/fanny packs

Puffa jacket

Culottes

Moon boots

Jump suit and stilettos

Hawaiian print shirts

Coloured Timberland boots

Pillbox hats

Patch work jeans

Fluorescent laces

Polar fleeces

Trainers with everything

Go Go boots

Ruffled chiffon shirts

Plastic neon jewellery

Purple jeans

Hoodies

Continues White, "Designers will always take inspiration from the past, which means these fashion faux pas will keep raising their ugly heads in fashion, but re-invented with a modern twist.  This is what makes fashion so exciting, but also guarantees there will be plenty fashion disasters ahead.  Celebrities are no exception."

The top five worst dressed celebrities as voted for by www.handbag.com readers were:

1 - Jodie Marsh

2 - Britney Spears

3 - Bjork

4 - Amy Winehouse

5 - Katie Price

And Victoria Beckham should not feel so smug as she was ranked at number nine, just behind Paris Hilton in the worst dressed fashion stakes.

Other interesting findings were:

A third of woman (33%) admitted to not telling a friend if they made a fashion faux pas

More worryingly 38% admitted that they secretly loved it when their friend looked awful as it made them look better

32% of respondents thought the 1960's was the most fashionable decade

41% admitted to destroying a photo as they were so ashamed of the outfit they were wearing in it
