The New Fashioned, created by whisky specialist and writer, Alwynne Gwilt (aka Miss Whisky) for World Duty Free for the World Duty Free Whisky Festival takes the classic blueprint of the decadent cocktail and re-vamps it for the 21st century. Enjoy.
- 50ml The Balvenie Triple Cask 12 Year old
- 5ml 100% pure maple syrup
- 2 dashes peach bitters
- 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary
- Ginger ale
- Cubed ice
To begin, put your serving glass in the freezer to chill before you begin to make your drink.
Next, combine the whisky, maple syrup and one dash of peach bitters, along with a single sprig of rosemary in a Manhattan or Boston shaker. Add six to seven large ice cubes, put the shaker top on, and unlike its more traditional counterpart, shake for 10-12 seconds (until the shaker is 'too cold to hold'), which adds a new twist and a more contemporary dimension to the cocktail.
The classic Old Fashioned recipe calls for the liquid to be stirred, so to add an innovative twist the New Fashioned cocktail is shaken – to splice the ingredients together in a new way.
Remove your serving glass from the freezer, add five large cubes of ice to it, and strain your cocktail mixture into the glass.
Top with a splash of ginger ale (to your liking, but around 30ml) along with one dash of peach bitters, and the second fresh sprig of rosemary.
