However, as the nation that introduced us to putting salty bacon on the side of pancakes with maple syrup (such wonders) - we fully support their flair for mixing ingredients and fat.
Thanksgiving is no such exception. Sure there's familiar things like turkey and pecan pie - but there are also candied yams.
In translation, candied yams are sweet potatoes baked with marshmallows on top.
We may not be celebrating Thanksgiving - but anything with a melty marshmallow topping, we'll happily have a bash at...
How to make candied yams
- Sweet potatoes - cut into chunks
- Some cubed butter
- Brown sugar
- Bag of mini marshmallows
- Optional: about half a tsp of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla essence
Preheat the oven to 200°C.
Pop the sweet potatoes into a pan of boiling water, and gently boil until they start to go soft. Take them out and slip off the skins.
Fill an ovenproof dish with your sweet potatoes.
Dot a few cubes or butter around the dish.
Sprinkle over a light layer of brown sugar (and the spices if using).
Top the whole thing with mini marshmallows.
Bake for around 25 mins, until the sweet potatoes are soft and the marshmallows have melted.
If the marshmallows start to go too brown, pop some tin foil over the top.
And there you have it. Now, who do we talk to about corn dogs?
