Winning Bartenders' Ball cocktail recipe: The Mary Jean

This cocktail beat off it's rivals in London bartender competition...

Winning cocktail at Bartenders Ball
This week Handbag attended the rather glamorously named Bartenders' Ball – a competition to discover the top bartender in London. (We know, it's a tough job…)

Held at the Paramount Soho – a dizzying 31 stories up Centrepoint – the Gin Connoisseur Programme event saw nine bartenders give their best Tom-Cruise-in-Cocktail impressions for a room of thirsty guests.

The base ingredient in all the cocktails was G'Vine – a grape based gin from France. From there, it was up to the competitors to create their signature drink – a challenge that saw the entrants whipping out the dry ice, fresh chillies, sugar bowls and Earl Grey teabags.

While running their one-man bars, the competitors were tested on their knowledge of gin, their barman banter, and the quality and presentation of their creation. Phew. It's a good thing no one was drinking on the job!

In the end, mixologist Hannah Lanfear from the Boisdale in Canary Wharf was crowned queen, thanks to her concoction, the Mary Jean. She will now head to the GCP international finals, taking place in Cognac in June.

Mix yourself up a Mary Jean at home with Hannah's recipe.
