The lyric references Tina Turner (who's real name is Anna Mae) who was subjected to horrific rape and abuse by her husband Ike. In one particularly awful incident, Ike forced Tina to eat cake in public by forcibly shoving it into her mouth after she said she didn't want any.
When Tina's backing vocalist tried to stop the abuse, Ike beat her and threatened her until she left.
So why on earth would Beyoncé and Jay Z want to sing about something so awful? People on Twitter are not happy...
Why is nobody talking about the domestic violence references on the new Beyoncé album?— hilary ann martin (@hil_billy) December 20, 2013
Just really wanna know why Beyoncé wants to dance around her husband while he makes a joke about domestic violence on her album?!— Gabbie Hart (@gabriellalhart) December 19, 2013
So Beyoncé and Jay Z are saying domestic violence ain't no thang and we're all ok with that?— KDS (@KrisDeSouza) December 19, 2013
But I do have an issue with the reference to domestic violence: "Eat the cake Anna Mae." Low blow, really. @Beyonce :/— Teri. (@Tterii) December 19, 2013
Not a fan of Beyonce, not my thing. But that lyric in 'Drunk in Love' is disgusting, trivialising #domesticviolence is never acceptable.— Kelly (@KellyizaGangsta) December 19, 2013
