A shocking new study has revealed 15% of people don't believe bisexuality is a valid sexual orientation. Errr, come again?
According to a report by the American Public Health Association, 15% of the US population think bisexual adults are either lying or are 'confused' about their sexuality.
The study also found that peoples' opinions of bisexuality are overwhelmingly negative among straight and gay communities. WOW.
If this wasn't worrying enough, the second half of the report assessed the perceived difference between male and female bisexuality.
The report showed that straight men were three times more likely to consider bisexuality "not a legitimate sexual orientation", suggesting heterosexual men see bisexual men as gay or just 'faking it'.
The conclusion? Male bisexuals are viewed more critically than female bisexuals. In addition, women are more tolerant of bisexuality than men.
According to Mackey Friedman, a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh who worked on the study, "Bisexual men and women face prejudice, stigma and discrimination from both heterosexual and homosexual people….this can cause feelings of isolation and marginalization, which prior research has shown leads to higher substance use, depression and risky sexual behaviour … It also can result in lower rates of HIV testing and treatment."
What do you think of this research?
Why does our sexuality have to be rigid? In society we're overly 'categorised' as male, female, straight, gay, tall, short, thin, fat, old, young...perhaps the bisexual orientation interferes in some peoples' minds with this cookie cutter approach to life. If you can't be put into a clear box you're somehow 'confused' or 'lying'.
Luckily there are both men and women out there who are willing to openly admit their bisexuality and banish misconceptions.
Take a look at some of our favourite celebrity females who've admitted to being bisexual in the gallery below...
