There is noting better on a hot sunny day than a chilled slab of juicy watermelon. But did you know watermelon is as good for you as it is tasty?
Here's some reasons to start scoffing more, much more, this summer....
1. Stock up on lycopene
Watermelon is king of lycopene - an important antioxidant, also found in tomatoes, apricots, grapefruit and papaya. Tomatoes are often showing off about their lycopene content, but watermelon actually trumps them.
Lycopene has been found to help keep your heart healthy and it has cancer fighting properties, believed to help prevent the risk of breast and prostate cancer.
2. It has the same effect as Viagra
Apparently the citrulline content in watermelon has been found to relax blood vessels in the same way as Viagra. And even if that doesn't work - it's still good for the arteries.
3. Lots of lovely vitamins
Not only are they just plain fun to eat, watermelons are also a good source of vitamins.
Vitamin A (good for your eyes), vitamin C (good for your immunity) and vitamin B6 (good for your brain).
4. Potassium aplenty
Watermelon is a very good source of potassium, which helps with muscle and nerve function and helps lower the risk of high blood pressure.
Guess what's in watermelon? Water of course. Made up of 92% water, they're a great way to rehydrate the body on a hot day.
Travel tip: Sometimes watermelons can be injected with local water to increase their weight - might be best to avoid in areas where you wouldn't drink the water.
6. Virtually fat free
Ok so it has some sugar in, but watermelon is virtually fat free - so tuck in we say. It has also been suggested to be good for people trying to lose weight.
