Summer is here, the sun is shining and the charcoals are out. Time to load up the barbeque.
But with steaks, hotdogs, cheeseburgers and all those mayo smothered salads – it's a dieters worst nightmare.
Follow these tips to keep the fat and calories down on your summer banquets…
1. Crudities not crisps
Before the real food is served, there's always a bevvy of crisps and dips. Choose vegetable crudities & salsa over crisps and mayonnaise based dips.
2. Don't drink your calories
A cooling beer might sound lovely on a hot day, but opt for slimlime gin and tonics or vodka and soda water over drinks with hidden calories.
3. Slimline that quarter pounder
Fancy a burger? Say no to cheese and the bun and enjoy with heaps of salad and pickles.
4. Avoid the dog
Fat laden hot dogs are a big no no – just avoid them and opt for leaner meats instead.
5. Chicken is your friend
Pick tasty and diet friendly BBQ'ed chicken over spare ribs, sausages and kebabs.
6. Not your party?
If you're not in control of the food on offer – be a generous guest and turn up armed with healthy additions. Some lovely whole fish or make some vegetable and halloumi skewers. Yum yum.
7. Beware the salad
Salads are not all nice. Crisp leaves, tomatoes and plenty of fresh veggies are great. Avoid the potato salad, coleslaw, anything that resembles mayonnaise, and keep an eye on the dressings – opting for balsamic vinegar instead.
8. Don't overlook fish
Big hunks of red meat are not the only way to go. Mackeral, salmon, sardines are all amazing on the barbeque. Or try wrapping some king prawns and vegetables with chilli and garlic in some tin foil and stick them on the BBQ for a tasty parcel.
9. Pudding time
Cookies, cakes, ice cream are the same whether you are standing outside eating them in the sunshine as if you were at the dinner table. Fresh fruit salad, big slices of watermelon or if all else fails sorbet is all good.
