For the uninitiated, the term bondage may bring to mind thoughts of being tied up in a dungeon with a leather clad dominatrix wielding a whip– not something everyone would find appealing!

In reality, bondage covers a very wide spectrum of emotional, sensual and imaginative possibilities and is the perfect way to inject more passion in to your sexual relationship.

Katie Fox, Sex and Relationship Expert at Bondara.co.uk, told us, "People often have misconceptions about bondage but the truth is it is one of the most sensual and erotic sexual encounters a couple can have. Because it requires a lot of trust and communication it strengthens emotional bonds, increases sexual intimacy and helps couples learn a lot about themselves and each other. All of these factors help couples to become better lovers."

So what does it involve? Bondage is the art of tying, binding, or restraining a person using ropes, cuffs, bondage tape or other restraints for the sexual, aesthetic or psychological pleasure of the parties involved.

The main feature of sexual bondage is that the restrained person surrenders control and is unable to interfere with sexual activity. Often, it is used as part of a sex game or sexual fantasy and as a form of foreplay.

If you're intrigued, take a look at these six reasons why bondage will make you better between the sheets...

1. Increase intimacy

To achieve sexual intimacy you need to let go and allow yourself to be vulnerable - there is no better way to do this than voluntarily surrendering control to your partner. If you are being restrained it demonstrates you trust your partner completely and if you are the restraining partner it demonstrates you are deserving of that trust - this can have a powerful effect on your relationship and deepen the emotional bonds between you.

2. Removes guilty feelings

Some people experience guilty feelings towards having sex which stops them from letting go and enjoying themselves fully – allowing your partner to take control and do naughty things to you in a trusted environment helps overcome these feelings as you are powerless to resist!

3. Explore your sensual side

Bondage allows you to show your partner your sensual side. You can use the ropes to gently caress your partner while tying and untying, or use the frayed end of ropes to stroke and tickle. If you want to up the ante and drive your partner wild with pleasure, simply tie knots in the ropes and use them to rub against your partner's hot spots...

4. Encourages communication

The best lovers know how to express what they like and what they don't and bondage is a great way for couples to practice this open communication. Pushing your pleasure to the limit or involving any form of pain requires you and your partner to be both honest and respectful to one another. Often couples will agree safe words beforehand so that the submissive partner can choose the intensity and when it stops.

5. Discover yourself

Acting out different scenarios and taking on different roles- such as slave and master- can be highly erotic and will open up sides of your sexual personality you may otherwise not reveal. By playing a role, you and your partner will learn a lot about yourselves and each other – knowledge is power when it comes to being a great lover!

6. Diffuse relationship niggles

As much as we love our partners, we all have moments when they drive us crazy! Left unsaid, little relationship niggles can lead to resentment which is the ultimate 'great sex killer.' Bondage can be a great way of diffusing these issues, communicating positively and injecting some humour at the same time. Next time your partner does something to annoy you simply tell them 'I'm going to get out my spanking paddle and deal with you later,' not only will this diffuse the situation by preventing a full scale row, you can use it to start your 'kiss and make up' session later...
