My my, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley really loves green juice. The model has often shared her love of the green stuff and it seems now she is making it herself, this time with added Spirulina & Chlorella.
She tweeted the pic saying, 'Delicious!!! #greens #juicing #kale#spinach #apples #Chlorella #Spirulina'
Spirulina and chlorella you say? But what are they?
They are forms of algae (ummmmm, appetising) – it tastes and smells a lot like seaweed. It is an anti-ageing food, great for keeping illness at bay and for supplementing a diet.
Spirulina is found in freshwater environments such as ponds, lakes and rivers (you can buy it in supplement form too) and is seen as one of the most nutritionally complete of all food supplements, as it contains lots of protein, iron and vitamins A, K and B complex.
It's packed with lots of those lovely antioxidants we hear so much about – being the richest beta carotene food (10 times more concentrated than carrots), which has been proven to have anti-cancer properties.
Being so protein and iron dense, it's great for people on a diet as it can provide you with lots of the goodies you are missing from food and it curbs those nasty hunger pangs.
Chlorella is also found in fresh water and is being used in the treatment of cancer. It boosts the immune system, stops the sread of infection and is great for promoting a healthy gut. It has long been used in Asia as a treatment for many illnesses including ulcers, asthma and for lowering cholesterol levels.
Available as a tablet or in powder form to throw in your juice à la Rosie HW – it's worth incorporating for a bit of a health boost.
Spirulina powder, £13.99, and chlorella tablets, £10.55, both available from hollandandbarrett.com
