Do you look back on losing your virginity with happy memories or as something you'd just rather forget? New research suggests people who had a good first time are destined to have better sex lives.
Results showed that people who felt loved and respected when they lost their virginity found future relationships more satisfying.
The findings come from the first published study to look at whether the circumstances of losing your virginity can have a consequence on your future sexual satisfaction.
Published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, researchers in America interviewed young men and women about their sexual pasts and made them fill out a sex diary.
The results found those who reported higher levels of anxiety and negativity at their first time were more likely to have sexual problems or dissatisfaction with their current sex lives.
This could suggest that bad first times may influence how people think and behave when it comes to sex.
'While this study doesn't prove that a better first time makes for a better sex life in general, a person's experience of losing their virginity may set the pattern for years to come,' explained author Matthew Shaffer.
