People define casual relationships in different ways - to some, it sounds glamorous, mysterious and exciting, while to others it sounds like a polite term for sleeping around.

Whatever you think, the key is to stay in control of the situation. If you're thinking of embarking on a casual relationship here are some things to remember...

Casual relationship rules

Be honest from the start

From the first date you need to be clear that you're not looking for a serious relationship or any form of commitment.

Once he knows this, it's up to him to decide whether he wants to take things further. Failing to disclose this information could result in you being accused of leading him on, especially if you're casually dating other people at the same time. Honesty is always the best policy.

Don't kiss and tell

Discretion, discretion, discretion. This needs to be your casual dating key word.

Your sex-buddy relationship with a friend of a friend might not seem so fun when you're whole social circle knows about it. This doesn't mean you have to lie, just watch what you say and respect both your own and his privacy.

But don't forget the same goes for him. If he's been blabbing to mutual friends, discussing your sex life or just bad-mouthing you, it's time to cut him loose.

Make sure you actually go out on dates

Even if you're not planning on making him your 'boyfriend' you still need to forge the essential bonds of trust and friendship that provide the foundation for sex. Try going out on a few relaxed dates, so you get to know each other.

Show him some respect

He's not a piece of meat you know (and neither are you).

He's got feelings, friends, family, a job and interests that you need to respect (even if you're not emotionally invested in them).

Stay true to yourself

You're in charge of your own actions, so it's up to you how long a casual relationship lasts and who you start one with.

Stick to your gut instinct and if at any point you want to take your relationship from casual to romance - say something. If he doesn't feel the same way, don't settle for anything less than you deserve.
