If you've ever been to Italy you'll know that pasta, risotto and pizza isn't just food over there, it's a way of life. The perfect ingredients, the best preparation and an excellent finished meal are like the three cornerstones of their food religion - get one wrong and everything comes tumbling down.

But according to a report by the Independent on Sunday, the Italians are mad at us and our touristy ways.

A respected Italian food institute is sick of tourists ordering steaming bowls of Italian goodness only to ruin them with inappropriate drinks, olive oil and oh good God no...the dreaded tomato ketchup.

In response to this travesty, the Parma-based Academia Barilla, which aims "to defend and safeguard Italian food products made by reputable artisans and certified denominations against poor-quality imitations", has created a list of the worst culinary mistakes that made die-hard Italians die a little inside.
