You Should Know About… Alexandra Burke’s new album

We’ve been waiting for a year for X Factor winner Alexandra Burke’s debut album, and it’s finally here.

Alexandra BurkeReleasing your debut album is a big deal. Releasing your debut album after winning X Factor is an even bigger deal.  With so many expectations riding on the outcome of your time in the studio, post X Factor, you’ll want everything to be perfect. Enter Alexandra Burke, fully-formed star.

Alexandra Burke has finally released her debut album, Overcome, and it was well worth the year-long wait. Hallelujah is on the album, but relegated to the status of bonus track, making it clear that Alexandra’s time on the X Factor isn’t forgotten, but it’s not part of who she is as a musician, and we’re so pleased.

There are less ballads on the album than you’d expect, which suits Alexandra’s style and keeps her firmly out of Leona Lewis territory, leaving Alexandra to make her entrance, seal her own style, and secure herself a place as a credible artist. One of our favourite ballads is The Silence, a smooth track, written by RedOne, who produced Just Dance and Poker Face for Lady Gaga. He also produced two tracks on Alex’s album, her next single Broken Heels and our favourite song Dumb, about a guy who’s really good looking but just isn’t all there. “I keep trying to go deep, but you haven’t got a deep end,” sings Alexandra, much to our delight. Broken Heels gets off to a bit of a slow start for our liking, but by the end you know that Alex has got a sure-fire hit.

There are some amazing dance tunes on the album such as All Night Long, which never fails to get our feet tapping. And there are also some surprisingly Motown-esque tunes, like Bury Me (Six Feet Under) and You Broke My Heart. Perhaps Alex is trying to remind X Factor audiences that she is the queen of covers – without actually doing a cover version on this album. Pure genius.

The album’s title track Overcome was the only big let down for us, just being a little too forgettable for a track that had the privilege of having an album named after it – or visa versa. We wanted something more. Other than that Alex does a brilliant job at establishing herself as an independent artist, bucking the trend of the X Factor’s previous failure to produce artists with a bright future. Excluding Leona Lewis, of course.
