Stardust
An all star adventure that will have you looking at the stars again and again
Starring: Claire Danes, Charlie Cox, Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer
Directed by: Matthew Vaughn
(PG), 128 mins, 2007, UK
What’s the story?
As with all tales of a fantasy and fairytale nature, it’s a classic tale of a loveable loser, Tristan (Charlie Cox), who goes on a quest to find a star and win the hand of marriage of the girl of his dreams (Sienna Miller). On his travels he meets stars, princes, witches, pirates, ghosts and unicorns as well as all sorts of other wacky and wonderful characters.
What’s to like?
Aside from the brilliant special effects and magical storyline, you can’t help but notice the incredible collection of (mostly British) actors. The leading two of Charlie Cox as the bumbling hero Tristan, and the gorgeous Claire Danes, back in the spotlight playing a human star Yvaine, have a magical on screen glow about them, while the effeminate, dress-wearing duo of Robert De Niro and Ricky Gervais provide probably the funniest point in a very entertaining film. But the real star of the show is Michelle Pfeiffer, who goes from looking more stunning than ever to positively hideous as the witch Queen Lamia, and leaves us shivering.
What’s not to like?
The only thing that does bug you about this film is that with such an excellent collection of comic actors and Hollywood superstars, you wish that they could all get a little bit more screen time. Stalwarts of British comedy are here, but are reduced to being barely recognisable and having to do nothing more than to just look silly.
Verdict
Hopefully this will be a smash hit and deserves to go down in fairytale history. It’s the perfect film to take your boyfriend, husband, kids, mum, or anybody else to, who you want to be thoroughly entertained.
