Rent Remixed review
We review William Baker's buffed up version of classic musical, Rent
Review by Corin Baird
What's the story?
Restyled and remixed for the naughties by Kylie's pal William Baker, Rent is back in London's West End at the Duke of York's Theatre.
Liking...
The score and lyrics are as powerful and moving as the first day they were performed and the cast are superb. Denise Van Outen is simply brilliant as the deliciously sexy Maureen, while former Sugababe Siobhán Donaghy gives a particularly moving performance as Mimi.
Not liking...
Although this new version is beautifully staged there are a few details, accents and arrangements that sit a little off kilter with the lyrics and the mood of the piece.
Who would like it?
There is no doubt that this is a wonderful show with a killer score, gorgeous vocals and superb lyrics. If you're a fan of the original, go with an open mind and enjoy the remix. If Rent is new to you, then be prepared to sit back and revel in the show with the biggest heart in the West End.
