What's the story?
In early '60s America, Tracy dances up a storm so fierce she wins a spot on a TV talent show where she causes a stir with her big hair and different opinions (she believes integration is the way to go.)
Who's in it?
Newcomer Nikki Blonsky takes on the role Ricki Lake made famous in John Waters's 1988 film original that was turned into a Broadway musical that, in turn, inspired this movie musical. Ricki makes a cameo while High School Musical's Zac Efron is amongst the members of the captivating young cast. It's the old hands that are really fascinating, though: a dragged up John Travolta and Christopher Walken as Tracy's proud parents, and Michelle Pfeiffer playing a bitchy stage mum.
How long before I get bored?
This may be a bit slow off the mark but once Hairspray gets going it thunders along.
Liking?
The eccentric storyline that celebrates the underdog, the energy and non-stop gags, and the feelgood message and fab song and dance numbers.
Not liking?
Although still dirty, the filthy humour of Waters's original has been toned down to achieve this more palatable result. Comedy performances you'd expect to be on top form, including Travolta's, Latifah's and Walken's, aren't.
DVD Extras
Loads of dance related goodies, extra scenes, documentaries and of course the all important sing along
