10 top TV moments from the last 10 years part two
2001 - The Ingrams
While Katie and Peter weren't to everyone tastes they certainly weren't comparable in the villain stakes to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire baddies Charles and Diana Ingram. Both appeared on the famous quiz show, Diana first scooping £32,000 before Charles won the £1million top prize. Except he never got the money, after a four-week trial a jury found the Ingrams, and accomplice Tecwen Whittock, guilty of cheating the show. Tapes showed Charles had been fed the correct answers by way of some well-timed coughs from Whittock. Though they professed their innocence, and continue to to this day, each received fines and suspended jail sentences.
1999 - Big Brother's Nasty Nick Bateman
We've seen a different sort of TV villain in the last ten years. Back in the olden days BH (before handbag) villains on TV were always fictional characters we loved to hate. All that changed with the introduction of Big Brother and first series housemate ‘Nasty' Nick Bateman. For thirty-six days we shouted as Nick's duplicitous and devious ways went unnoticed by his fellow housemates. He lied non-stop, tricked the housemates into voting each other off the show and even claimed to have survived the road accident (that didn't happen) that took the life his girlfriend (who never existed) while on a driving holiday in Australia (that he never went on). Sadly, all good things come to end and Nick's came during a highly charged house meeting that was essential viewing.
2009 - Jade Goody's funeral
Big Brother has given us many ‘celebrities' over the last decade but none were bigger or more controversial than Jade Goody. After initially being lambasted for her lack of general knowledge she turned public opinion around to finish in fourth place. From there she made a series of reality shows before returning for her infamous run in the 2007 series of Celebrity Big Brother. After being smuggled out of the house effigies of her were burnt and world leaders discussed her role in the racist bullying of Shilpa Shetty. However, public opinion swayed in her favour yet again when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2008. Even with such an amazing life, no one could have expected the incredible scenes we saw when she tragically lost her fight with the disease and died in March.
2002 - Pop Idol final
Of course TV wasn't just making celebrities out of ‘normal' people, talented ones were being given a chance too. After watching the success of Big Brother it didn't take executives long to get hip to the opportunity TV talent shows presented them. The format had been a staple of 60s and 70s schedules but had long been considered old hat but with the earning potential phone-line votes presented it wasn't long before we were swimming in searches for new stars. However, it took ITV some tinkering with the format before they got it right. First, there was Popstars, that set records but had no phone lines - doh! Then Popstars: The Rivals where we picked the bands - Girls Aloud and One True Voice (shame on us!) - but with 10 eventual winners it became hard to follow. But it was third time lucky with the arrival of Pop Idol - and industry heavyweights Simons Cowell and Fuller. A nation watched with bated breath to find out who would win the first series final. Eventually Gareth Gates was toppled by Will Young. Let's remind ourselves how he did it...
2009 - Susan Boyle
Did we get a glimpse into the television future when Susan Boyle performed on Britain's Got Talent in April? The show had decent enough ratings when the Scottish singer appeared on television for the first time and belted out I Dreamed A Dream but by the time it hit the Internet things went bananas. In a little over a fortnight the video of her performance had clocked up over 100million plays on YouTube and won her fans from all over the world (whatever the world, Stavros Flatley were the real stars!) So, does this mean we'll all be watching what we want, when we want on computers in ten years time? Well, we'll see but whatever happens handbag.com will have it covered.
