I've never done anything like this before...climbing up Kilimanjaro for cancer

Seeing the devastating effects of cancer through her work as a children's nurse, Lyn Taylor has decided to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care by climbing 6000m up Mount Kilimanjaro - despite her fear of heights. Here's her story and how you can help.

woman runningMarie Curie Cancer Care is such a worthy charity - there are very few of us that will go through life untouched by cancer. Alarmingly, more than one in three of us will develop it at some point. Unfortunately, it will also affect us lucky ones who aren't diagnosed as well. Perhaps your boss, your favourite restaurant chef, your sister, or even your little niece or nephew may get cancer. That is why I have chosen to support Marie Curie.

To show my dedication to the charity, I have chosen one of the most strenuous and demanding treks possible. In order to raise funds I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It will take months of training (and a lot of nerve) for the trek as it is 6000m high - and I'm scared of heights. I will be camping in temperatures ranging from a humid 32 degrees to below freezing at summit. Brrrr.

Anyway, the trek takes six days. Day six involves setting off from the summit at midnight and trekking for a continuous 16 hours, all by the light of my head torch! I have never, ever done anything like this before...and when I'm climbing I will probably be thinking I'm never going to do anything like this again! It will be both tough and exhilarating, but I'm determined to complete it.

As a children's nurse I see the holistic effect that cancer has on the entire family. It's devastating when we admit a scared little child who cannot even turn to Mummy or Daddy for support because he or she is dead from cancer.

Marie Curie Cancer Care wholeheartedly offer amazing and high quality services that provide totally free nursing care to terminally ill people. They also support the families.

I am doing this fundraising and training for the trek in my own time, but I still need your help. You can support me and Marie Curie Cancer Care by donating online at at www.justgiving.com/lynlt75 - and remember that every pound you give will increase by an extra 28p due to gift aid.

Thank you for all of your support!
