It is a great time for cinema as all the big hitting films trying to get in on some Oscars action are being released.

The shortlist will be announced on January 16, so there is plenty of time to become a bit of a film smart-arse and see these hotly tipped films.

Dallas Buyers Club

Matthew McConaughey is getting rave reviews for his performance as a HIV positive drug addict, who takes on the American Food and Drug Administration by smuggling in anti-viral medications from other countries.

McConaughey's physical transformation aside, Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto also give stella performances and are tipped for supporting role awards.

Gravity

Sandra Bullock is presumed to get a nod for her intense performance in the spinning space thriller Gravity. Read our review here and watch the trailer:

12 Years a Slave

Not out in the UK until January (boooo), Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Chiwetel Ejiofor all star in this dark historical drama about a free black man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Will someone please just give Leonardo DiCaprio an Oscar already? What else does the boy need to do? We can not wait to see this film from legendary director Martin Scorsese. Alongside the fantastic Leo, Jonah Hill is thought to be up for best supporting actor alongside Jared Leto.

Saving Mr Banks

Emma Thompson is thought to get a nod as best actress in this film about the making of the adaptation of Mary Poppins by Walt Disney (played by Tom Hanks).

Inside Llewyn Davis

The Coen Brothers latest offering with a sad comedy about a struggling folk singer. Oscar Isaac stars at Llewyn Davis and it is thought to be up for Best Film after it had rave reviews at both Cannes Film Festival and the London Film Festival.

Blue Jasmine

Cate Blanchett is already thought to be in the running for Best Actress for her performance as a wealthy woman leading a life of luxury who lost everything after her husband turns out to be a crook.
