Woah there, hold the phone, calm down, back up, cool your jets Fox producers because we're not convinced that, with your less than stellar track record, a remake of Broadchurch is really the way to go. Yeah sure, David Tennant has signed on to play an American version of lead detective DI Alec Hardy, but we all know what happened to the remakes of The Inbetweeners, Skins and Being Human. In short. They were crap.
You just can't beat the Brits. We know what we're doing by now, so it's probably best to leave the comedy and the gritty dramas to us...and the Swedish.
If you're yet to experience the agony of American remakes of Brit classics, here's the lowdown...
The problem with adapting a comedy is that the humour in the Inbetweeners is uniquely British. Unfortunately, instead of crafting a comedy based on the hit Channel 4 show, the US producers just lifted the entire script. Watch this amazing comparisson of the infamous 'Bus Wanker' incident versus the American 'Bus Turds' accident. It's painful...
The Brit version of this hit sci-fi drama was awesome because it was self-aware, funny, serious and romantic all at the same time. The American remake is just serious and they don't have Russell Tovey.
Steve Carell is funny, but this whole series just missed the spark of dead pan, dark humour that the British version had in spades. Here's a few moments of the US remake to give you an idea...
Some reviewers even went as far as to say that the American version of gritty, drug fuelled teen drama Skins ruined the whole franchise and cast a shadow of crapness over everything. Sad times. It really was awful though. Check out the trailer...
The IT Crowd
No one can replace Chris O'Dowd, Richard Ayoade and Katherine Parkison - they are comedy gods among mere mortals. Watch this comparison of the pilot episodes of the two shows here...
We could talk about the remakes of Absolutely Fabulous, Cold Feet, Men Behaving Badly and Faulty Towers (or Payne as the over-the-pond dwellers called it), but we think you get the idea!
The US Broadchurch will start shooting in January 2014 and will air on Fox either later that year or in early 2015. Chris Chibnall - creator of the original show and executive producer on the remake - has claimed that Fox's take could be "as good [as] if not better" than the UK original. We'll save our judgements...but will the twist be the same?
What do you think? Will Broadchurch America-stylee be awesome or really bad?
